Rubin Design Bureau, a Russian marine engineering company, has unveiled the design of the first version of a submersible patrol ship intended for foreign customers.
The project was conceived to combine the benefits of a submarine and a surface patrol vessel.
The vessel is named Sentry (Border and Offshore Submersible Sentry, BOSS) with architecture and outline resembling Whiskey-class submarines (Project 613) of the Cold War period.
It will be around 60m to 70m long, depending on the configuration, with a surface displacement of around 1,000t.
Sentry will be capable of accommodating a crew of up to 42 people, including the boarding team and can be equipped with torpedoes, small guided missiles and autocannon.
The submersible patrol ship will also feature large pressure-proof containers to store rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIB) for boarding teams or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with up to three hours endurance.

By GlobalDataThe vessel is designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and other missions. It can also be used as a training vessel for the beginners before they start operating submarines.
Usually, offshore patrol vessels are used to prevent illegal trade, poaching and other law infringements. These ships can also operate as rescue or research vessels.
The additional diving capability of the newly unveiled submersible will improve its surveillance abilities and help it to continue with its mission in harsh weather conditions.
Rubin is regarded as one of the largest marine engineering companies in Russia offering design services. The company primarily focuses on designing submarines, marine robotic systems, and other structures.
