Systems Engineering & Assessment (Sea), a subsidiary of UK-based tech company Cohort, has been selected to deliver its Torpedo Launcher System (TLS) for a multi-million-pound Latin American frigate programme.

The TLS is a close-range, rapid-response system designed to fire various Nato-compatible standard lightweight torpedoes.

These torpedoes including the US Mk44, Mk46, and Mk54; UK Sting Ray; Italian A244S; French MU90; and Korean Blue Shark.

Its modular design allows it to be configured for other weapons, supporting a variety of ammunition sources.

The TLS, with more than three decades of service in the UK Royal Navy, allows it to be integrated into containerised mission modules, enhancing adaptability and reducing obsolescence risks.

SEA Latin America strategic accounts vice-president Neil Herbert said: “This contract award represents a major step in our ambition to share the best of the industry’s technology with navies across the globe. It also proves the pedigree of our Torpedo Launcher System, and the value of weapon-agnostic defence capabilities to international navies.

“The TLS will provide our end user with control of its ammunition supply chain and help future-proof the new frigates ahead of new weapon developments.

“We look forward to continuing to build on our strong relationship with our partners and customers across Latin America.”

In January 2024, Cohort secured a contract, worth a £15.1m ($19.2m), for the supply of lightweight TLS for the Royal Canadian Navy, with completion expected for 2030.

In July 2024, Marshall was selected to produced composite torpedo launcher tubes for SEA in support of two “major international naval vessel programmes”.

The launcher tubes are comprised of a filament-wound glass reinforced plastic structure intended to be lightweight and corrosion-resistant for use in the naval domain.
