The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Finnish Defence Forces Logistic Command (FDF LogCom) have begun work under a previously announced collaboration that aims to develop the torpedo system 47, in addition to providing cost-efficient maintenance operations.
The two nations will exchange experience and knowledge regarding the utilisation of the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) torpedo as part of the project.
FMV Naval System Department head Odd Werin said: “This cooperation creates the conditions for coordination, and thus lower costs, for maintaining and further developing torpedo systems 47.
“In addition to that, we can also share experience.”
Both Sweden and Finland will work on a variety of areas under the project, including the lending of ‘Torpedsystem 45’ in support of the initiative and the joint development, verification, integration and training of torpedo system 47.
The development will also outline plans for future cooperation during the entire lifecycle of the new ASW torpedo system.

By GlobalDataThe collaboration will be supported by a steering committee, which is set to be formed to monitor and make decisions within the framework of the cooperation.
Saab Dynamics has been selected as the supplier responsible for developing, building and integrating the lightweight torpedo system for the Swedish and Finnish navies.
Werin also noted that the partnership will help provide improved opportunities for cooperation during the Swedish Finnish Naval Task Group’s ASW operations.
Werin added: “We will also explore the possibilities for, for example, future development of torpedo systems 47, education and user groups throughout the lifecycle of the torpedo system.’
FMV and FDF LogCom previously initiated the cooperative development of the new lightweight torpedo system in January with the signing of two cooperation agreements.
The first of the agreements covered the development and procurement of the system, while the second related to the lending of Sweden’s current Torpedsystem 45 until the new weapon comes into use.
