The US State Department has approved the possible foreign military sale (FMS) of Advanced Technology (AT) Heavy Weight Torpedoes (HWT) worth approximately $180m to Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO).
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress about the possible sale.
Under the contract, TECRO will buy 18 MK-48 Mod6 AT torpedoes and associated equipment.
The deal also includes the delivery of spare parts, support and test equipment, shipping and shipping containers, operator manuals, technical documentation, training, US Government and contractor engineering, as well as technical and logistics support services.
This proposed sale, which is consistent with US law and policy, aims to serve US national, economic and security interests. It will support efforts to modernise the armed forces and to maintain defence capability and readiness.
Once delivered, the torpedoes will enhance Taipei forces’ capability and improve their current and future defences.

By GlobalDataDesigned by Raytheon Technologies, the MK 48 Mod 6 AT torpedo is used for optimum effectiveness against all targets in littoral and deep-water environments.
With guaranteed supportability through 2025, it is a cost-effective, up-to-date configuration of the MK 48 family designed to handle emerging threats.
As all materials will be procured from US Navy stocks, there are no prime contractors associated with this deal.
Implementation of the proposed sale is estimated to require assignment of various US Government and contractor representatives to the recipient.
The sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region and is not expected to have any adverse impact on US defence readiness.
