The UK is set to enhance its nuclear submarine operations with the inauguration of a new facility designed to foster collaboration between the government and the private sector.
The newly established Babcock Submarine Availability Support Hub (SASH) aims to streamline the delivery of submarines, augment engineering expertise within the UK and ensure the sustainability of the nation’s uninterrupted maritime nuclear defence posture.
It is expected to generate 100 new employment opportunities while also bolstering apprenticeship programmes throughout the country.
The launch of this hub also aligns with the government’s Plan for Change, which emphasises bolstering national security and stimulating economic expansion.
Defence Minister Maria Eagle presided over the opening ceremony of the SASH in Bristol. This hub contributes to an existing workforce of 42,000 individuals and leverages a supply chain comprising more than 3,000 businesses dedicated to sustaining the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent capability.
Maria Eagle said: “It was a privilege to open the new Babcock Submarine Availability Support Hub in Bristol, and to have the opportunity to speak with civilian colleagues and Navy personnel alike.

By GlobalData“The investment in this new facility is another demonstration of the government’s commitment to making defence an engine for growth. This brand new facility will benefit the UK’s nuclear deterrent, which safeguards our security and bolsters our country’s prosperity.”
The SASH supports submarine operations at various locations including Devonport Royal Dockyard, Rosyth facilities and His Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde.
The operations along the waterfront at Clyde and Devonport will also be enhanced through the SASH, which focuses on refining processes, scheduling and readiness for maintenance cycles. This effort is part of a cohesive Naval Nuclear enterprise aimed at ensuring the operational readiness of submarines.
Babcock CEO David Lockwood said: “The Submarine Availability Support Hub is an exemplar facility for defence collaboration in the UK. We are working alongside our customers and partners to provide long-term sustainable infrastructure in the South West that will not only host and support the important operations that protect our country but also provide career opportunities for people passionate about our industry.”
This development follows the UK MOD’s reception of the initial work package in November last year from Babcock as part of Project TAMPA.
The seven-year project began in 2021 to escalate the adoption of 3D-printed components within the UK military.
