The UK Government has confirmed plans to carry out a capability study regarding the installation of the latest and advanced Australian radar on-board the Royal Navy’s future warships.
The announcement was made by the government’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Harriett Baldwin.
Work on the study is slated to begin early next year and will be conducted to look at the feasibility of fitting Australian defence contractor CEA Technologies’ Ceafar radar on-board navy vessels.
Ceafar is an active phased-array radar that features an innovative microwave tile-based design. It is also equipped with complete 3D multifunction capabilities.
The combination of the microwave tile and the digital beam forming (DBF) backend offers a modular, programmable and scalable solution.
The radar can be configured to address operational, physical and cost requirements for both military and civil applications.

The partnership between the UK and Australia is expected to help bolster co-operation between the two nations.
Australian Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said: “Australia and the UK have much that can be gained from increasing co-operation around defence industry.”
Pyne added: “Canberra’s CEA Technologies designs and manufactures advanced phased-array radars for our navy’s eight Anzac-class frigates as part of their anti-ship missile defence upgrade programme and the recently announced long-range air search radar replacement.”
In addition, the Australian Government has mandated that the entire fleet of the country’s future frigates be integrated with a CEA radar as one of its primary capabilities.
