The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of naval strike missile (NSM) coastal defence systems (CDS) to Romania.
The potential sale is estimated to be worth $300m.

The proposed package includes two CDS consisting of up to ten Link-16 multifunctional information distribution system – joint tactical radio systems (MIDS-JTRS).
The Romanian Government has also requested for two CDS fire distribution centres (FDCs), four mobile launch vehicles, transport loading vehicles, naval strike missiles, and non-operational inert handling/loading missile (IHM).
Associated items included in the sale are training missile and equipment spares, associated containers, training and training equipment, spares parts, loading and mobile maintenance support, and more.
Congress has been notified about the FMS by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

The agency also noted that it will improve US national security objectives in the region.
Raytheon Missile and Defense will serve as the principal US contractor.
Romania will also be offered training and maintenance support by US Government and contractor personnel.
The NSM is a long-range, precision strike anti-ship and land-attack missile. It has been developed by Norway-based Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA).
The mission-effective weapon will help the country boost its maritime defence capabilities against existing and future threats while improving Nato interoperability.
The FDC serves as NSM CDS system’s core integrating element and features open modular software architecture, according to KDA.
It is designed to provide Battle Management Command Control Communication Computers and Information (BMC4I).
In December 2014, KDA signed a contract with the Polish Ministry of National Defence for an NSM CDS.
In July 2016, Raytheon entered a partnership with KDA to produce NSM launchers at its factory in Louisville, Kentucky, US.
