The US is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber taskforce to the US Central Command (CENTCOM) region.
The deployment is in response to several “indications and warnings” of threats by Iran. The nature of the threat was not made public. The CENTCOM Area of Responsibility stretches from Northeast Africa across the Middle East to Central and South Asia.
Tensions between the US and Iran have been on the rise ever since US President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and imposed fresh sanctions on Tehran.
Recently, Trump has upped the ante on Tehran, further intensifying the sanctions.
On 6 May, US national security adviser John Bolton confirmed the deployment of the forces.
In a statement, Bolton said: “In response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings, the US is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber taskforce to the US Central Command region to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on US interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.
