The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale of MH-60R multi-mission helicopter equipment and follow-on support to India.

Valued at $1.17bn, the sale aims to bolster India’s anti-submarine anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and vertical replenishment capabilities.

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems will serve as the principal contractor for this deal.

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, the combination of advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics makes the Seahawks well-suited to address the Indian Navy’s maritime security requirements, enhancing capabilities to counter both conventional and asymmetric threats.

The MH 60R helicopter will bolster India’s blue-water capabilities, broadening the Navy’s operational reach and supporting sustained naval operations across extensive maritime areas. Its deployment in the Indian Ocean region will enhance the Indian Navy’s presence, deterring potential threats and maintaining a secure environment in this strategically vital region.

India’s request includes 30 multifunctional information distribution system-joint tactical radio systems (MIDS-JTRS).
