Elbit Systems of America - Night Vision LLC, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems Ltd., has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract with a maximum value of $500m (NIS1.8bn) by the US Department of Defense.

This deal, awarded by the US Department of Defense, is to improve the US Marine Corps' capabilities with the supply of Squad Binocular Night Vision Goggle (SBNVG) systems.

With work to be executed in Roanoke, Virginia, the contract is slated for completion by 2028, aiming to promise to equip the Marines with technology for nighttime situational awareness.

The SBNVG, a lightweight helmet-mounted system, has nighttime viewing capabilities across diverse environments. Featuring an extended battery life and white phosphor image intensification tubes, this system ensures improved clarity and depth perception to elevate the warfighters' performance on the battlefield.

In February 2021, Elbit Systems was awarded a $82m contract to supply the Royal Netherlands Army with Active Protection Systems and electro-optical commander sights, according to GlobalData's "The Global Military Electro-optical/Infrared (EO/IR) Systems Market 2021-2031" report.

Elbit Systems' president and CEO, Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, expressed his honour in providing equipment to the US Marine Corps. "This ID/IQ contract for Squad Binocular Night Vision Goggles follows previous orders and cements Elbit Systems Of America as a leading partner of choice by the US Marine Corps.

We are honoured to provide proven and cutting-edge equipment to the men and women of the US Marine Corps that will facilitate superior battlefield awareness."

This isn’t the first contract Elbit Systems of America has received from the US Marine Corps. In 2021, Elbit Systems of America secured a $41m contract for the supply of Squad Binocular Night Vision Goggle systems to the US Marine Corps. This agreement was part of a $249m five-year contract awarded in September 2019.

Raanan Horowitz, president and CEO of Elbit Systems America, emphasised the company's pride in a history of supplying Marines with night vision and electro-optic technology. "Elbit Systems America is proud of our long history supplying Marines with night vision and electro-optic innovations.

We continue to refine our portfolio, offering solutions that enable the networked Warfighter of the future with sophisticated decision aids and display systems."

Internet of Things (IoT) in Defense

The applications of IoT in defense are wide-ranging and include health monitoring, AR remote training, gaining situational awareness using drones, vehicle management, target recognition, and many more. For instance, smart sensors can be used on military equipment to give data on their health and whether maintenance is needed. This helps reduce operating costs and downtime for military equipment as the sensor can predict when a breakdown is imminent. However, the proliferation of IoT has also brought up security concerns.
