Notably, the number of advanced materials-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 94 in Q4 2023, versus 116 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 53% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that RTX filed the most advanced materials patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 14 advanced materials-related patents in the quarter, compared with 6 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Electricite de France with 14 advanced materials patent filings, Boeing (9 filings), and U.S. Department of Defence (7 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 50% share of total patent filings
The largest share of advanced materials related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 50%, followed by France (9%) and China (3%). The share represented by the US was 14% higher than the 36% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
