Raytheon, a division of RTX, has concluded a Delta design review for its Advanced Electronic Warfare (ADVEW) prototype, aimed at enhancing the US Navy's F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet multi-mission tactical aircraft.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which entered service in 1999, is a high-performance, twin-engine striker available in single-seat (E) and two-seat (F) configurations.

The ADVEW initiative is set to replace current electronic warfare elements on the aircraft, focusing on boosting defence capabilities and ensuring long-term functionality.

The review, which concluded ahead of the planned timeline, evaluated the compatibility and performance of weapons replaceable assemblies within the hardware system, ensuring they meet the necessary standards.

The assessment verified that the system is equipped to deliver essential electronic attack and support measures capabilities.

Raytheon Advanced Products & Solutions president Bryan Rosselli said: “This event is a significant milestone that demonstrates our multi-function approach of integrating electronic support and electronic attack to revolutionise modern electronic warfare systems.

“Our solution provides the needed capabilities to defeat the ever-evolving threats of the world's most dangerous adversaries now and well into the future.”

Employing digital and model-based systems engineering methodologies, Raytheon has enhanced requirement tracking, simplified system integration, and reduced potential risks, facilitating a smoother transition onto aircraft platforms.

The company's strategy involves utilising shared materials and manufacturing techniques to optimise production scalability, curb expenses, alleviate supply chain pressures, and maintain timely delivery schedules.

In December 2023, Raytheon secured an $80m contract following a competitive selection process to develop a prototype for the US Navy.

With the Delta Design Review now complete, this achievement signifies progress in the ADVEW project and ushers in subsequent stages that encompass government laboratory evaluations.

These tests will confirm compliance with open mission systems standards and showcase the system's advanced capabilities.

In 2023, Raytheon also introduced its StormBreaker smart weapon to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
