Textron Systems secures an amendment to reform the US Marine Corps (USMC) advanced reconnaissance vehicle (ARV) programme, focusing on boosting command, control, communications, and computers' (C4) capabilities, alongside automotive systems.

One of the standout features of this amendment is the integration of battle software, which upgrade and refines programme requirements, but also aims to redefine the ARV's operational capacities. Textron Systems' Cottonmouth software solutions will support the Marines as they evaluate and prepare for diverse operations.

The US Marines have sought an ARV platform to replace the LAV in service since the 1980s. A Congressional report published in May 2022 set out desired operational capabilities for the ARV; these include features that will constitute a highly advanced and networked platform that is highly protected, has good mobility, can be easily transported, and can provide various lethality options.

The expected cost of the acquisition from Textron Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems is $6.6bn, and the contract period is between 2022 and 2032, according to GlobalData's intelligence on the US defence market.

By extending purpose-built ARV development efforts into 2025, Textron Systems positions itself as a player in advancing the USMC's capabilities on the modern battlefield. The ARV is being upgraded to meet the evolving challenges of warfare to ensure the Marines have a strategic edge in any mission scenario they may encounter.

In late 2022, Textron Systems delivered the Cottonmouth ARV prototype to the US Marine Corps to support the programme. The amphibious 6x6 Cottonmouth ARV, designed with reconnaissance capabilities, can navigate open ocean and littoral water obstacles.
