UK Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate HMS Sutherland has set sail for training after a four-year service life extension (LIFEX), marking a milestone in its journey back to full operational capability.
This development follows the UK government's announcement in January 2025 regarding the vessel's anticipated return.
To commemorate HMS Sutherland's return to the sea, a ceremony was held onboard before the vessel journeyed down the River Tamar into Plymouth Sound for its initial training before commencing sea trials.
The current operational timeline for HMS Sutherland extends until the year 2032, at which point it is to be succeeded by one of the eight Type 26 frigates that will assume duties in anti-submarine warfare.
Babcock said that it has delivered enhancements to HMS Sutherland, including upgrades to power generation, machinery, structural surveys, and critical system installations.
Notably, HMS Sutherland is said to have required around 600 structural inserts as part of the refit.
The upkeep work was carried out at Babcock’s Royal Naval Dockyard located inside HMNB Devonport. The ship arrived on-site in April 2021.
The company has worked in collaboration with the Royal Navy and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) on this extension process.
Babcock Marine Sector chief executive Nick Hine said: “After a significant upkeep programme, it is fantastic to see HMS Sutherland starting sea trials and well on her way to achieving full capability before rejoining the fleet.
“Our team has provided trusted expertise, utilising our long-standing through-life support experience to ready the ship before she recommences her journey to support the nation’s defence. We’re proud to support these important naval assets and to work alongside our MoD and Royal Navy colleagues.”
Launched in 1996 and constructed by Yarrow Shipbuilders on the Clyde, HMS Sutherland is the 13th Type 23 frigate.
Its diverse missions range from engaging enemy warships to aiding in humanitarian efforts.
During its service, HMS Sutherland has achieved speeds more than 34 knots in time trials back in 2004.
Babcock has also taken up upkeep responsibilities for the Type 23 frigates, following the award of a contract to manage the type's operational availability.
