In a display of unity and commitment to upholding international law, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) and the Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Ottawa (FFH 341) recently undertook a routine Taiwan Strait transit.

This passage, beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state, reaffirms the principles of freedom of navigation and overflight. The voyage is a testament to the strong partnership between the United States and Canada, highlighting their shared dedication to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

In a demonstration of international co-operation, the passage, conducted in adherence to international law, emphasises the principles of freedom of navigation and overflight in this waterway.

The transit, which occurred on November 1 (local time), marked a collaboration between the United States and Canada, showcasing their dedication to a secure and prosperous region. The two naval vessels embarked on an unprovocative journey, reiterating their commitment to international norms.

This transit serves as a symbol of unity and friendship between the two North American nations. It emphasises the importance of allowing aircraft and ships from all countries to operate by international law, ensuring the stability and security of the region.

A series of US Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers have transited through the Taiwan Strait, including the USS Ralph Johnson and the USS Mustin, in recent years.

China has threatened the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Taiwan. The US has long supported the Taiwanese in their fight against China's efforts to annex the state. The US has committed to ensuring Taiwan remains an independent state and upholds a close military relationship, according to GlobalData's "US Defence Market 2022-2027" report.

Taiwan's National Defence Report 2023 has warned of China's increasing military presence near Taiwan, with drones and fighters amassing along the coast just 130km from the island. The report also accuses China of employing hybrid warfare tactics, including cyberattacks, with approximately 20m daily cyberattacks originating from China.

The Taiwan Strait is a vital maritime passage in East Asia, and this peaceful transit reinforces the enduring commitment to uphold the principles of international law. This effort is a testament to the shared values and interests that the United States and Canada continue to champion, further solidifying their presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan's significance as a global economic hub underlines the importance of stability in the region, given the potential disruptions to the world economy and advanced defence capabilities relying on Taiwan's semiconductor fabrication facilities in case of conflict.

5G in Defense - Impact Analysis

Current 5G networking technologies provide increased data transmission speed and capacity when compared to current solutions, a factor which will be critical in enabling the digital transformation of the modern battlefield envisioned by military strategists worldwide. By combining 5G with other emerging technologies such as AI, VR, and defense cloud networking, armed forces have the potential to revolutionize real-time command and control (C2) on the battlefields of the 21st century. However, 5G networks also present a new raft of information security challenges.
