The sale aims to bolster India's anti-submarine capabilities and aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives.

Upasana Mukherjee December 03 2024

The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale of MH-60R multi-mission helicopter equipment and follow-on support to India.

Valued at $1.17bn, the sale aims to bolster India's anti-submarine anti-surface warfare, search and rescue, medical evacuation, and vertical replenishment capabilities.

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems will serve as the principal contractor for this deal.

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, the combination of advanced weapons, sensors, and avionics makes the Seahawks well-suited to address the Indian Navy's maritime security requirements, enhancing capabilities to counter both conventional and asymmetric threats.

The MH 60R helicopter will bolster India’s blue-water capabilities, broadening the Navy's operational reach and supporting sustained naval operations across extensive maritime areas. Its deployment in the Indian Ocean region will enhance the Indian Navy’s presence, deterring potential threats and maintaining a secure environment in this strategically vital region.

India's request includes 30 multifunctional information distribution system-joint tactical radio systems (MIDS-JTRS).

Integrated into a host platform, MIDS JTRS offers Link 16 digital datalink, voice communications, Tactical Air Navigation, and three programmable channels for additional JTRS Software Communications Architecture waveforms.

It also enhances Link 16 throughput and enables frequency re-mapping.

The deal further include various non-major defence equipment items such as advanced data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, and AN/AAS 44C(V) forward looking infrared system, facilities study, design, construction and support, among others.

The package also covers test equipment, spare parts, communications equipment, and personnel training.

The proposed sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives, strengthening the strategic relationship with India.

It aims to improve security in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions, supporting political stability, peace, and economic progress.

The Indian Navy commissioned the MH-60R Seahawk helicopters in March 2024 at INS Garuda, Kochi, under the INAS 334 squadron. The helicopters are included in a 24-aircraft foreign military sales agreement signed with the US government in February 2020

The aircraft are also part of India’s Defence modernisation journey. According to GlobalData, the Indian defence budget (excluding pensions) is projected to increase to $89bn in 2028, reflecting a CAGR of 7.2% over the period 2024-28.
