A fire broke out onboard the KD Sri Inderapura badly damaging the ship while the vessel was anchored at Lumut Naval Base on the 8 October 2009.
Malaysian defence minister Ahmad Zahid said the vessel would be loaned to relieve the burden currently shouldered by two RMN transport ships KD Mahawangsa and KD Inderasakti.
The South Korean Navy has five Kojoon Bong Class LSTs currently in service of which one is expected to enter Malaysian Naval service.
