The Brazilian Navy plans to acquire six nuclear-powered submarines and 20 new conventional submarines by 2047.
The first nuclear submarine is under construction and the other five will be built at the Itaguai shipyard that is currently being built in Rio de Janeiro state.
The first nuclear submarine will cost $2.7bn, which will include the expense of acquiring technology from Paris-based DCNS shipyard, according to Bloomberg.
The 20 conventional submarines will be built in two lots – 15 new ones, and the remaining five being refurbished.
Of the 15 new ones, four will be reformed versions of the French Scorpion with an additional displacement capacity of 100t and 5m longer.
The remaining five include four Tupi Class, based on German technology, and one Tikuna Class developed by the Brazilian Navy, according to MercoPress.
