The German Navy has deployed another naval frigate to the Horn of Africa as part of the European Union’s Atlanta anti-piracy mission.

The Bremen warship with a crew of 220 left the northern German port of Wilhelmshaven and set to sail around 5,000 miles to reach Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa by 11 August 2009.

The 428ft Bremen will secure commercial shipping lanes and guard vessels with food supplies from the United Nations World Food Programme.

The newly sent Bremen will replace the Rheinland-Pfalz, which is currently operating in the region in association with another Bremen Class frigate Brandenburg.
