US-based technology company MIND Technology has concluded a demonstration of its low–cost anti-submarine warfare (ASW) system, Sea Serpent, for the US Navy.
As part of the demonstration, the ASW system performed an autonomous operation to detect an underwater target in a realistic scenario.
The system was deployed from an uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) during the Navy’s Coastal Trident 2022 maritime exercise.
MIND CEO and president Rob Capps said: “We are incredibly pleased with this successful demonstration from our Sea Serpent ASW system.
“We believe this illustrates the versatility of our technologies and our ability to adapt our existing technology to new and unique applications.
“The primary aim of this experiment was to demonstrate that the Sea Serpent is a viable ASW product that can be rapidly, easily and reliably deployed from a small USV.”
The Sea Serpent system is based on MIND Technology’s SeaLink seismic streamer technology, which was a commercially developed system used to conduct seismic surveys worldwide.
The technology can support a wide range of missions, including maritime domain awareness, harbour security, environment monitoring and ASW operations.
It is a low-power, scalable solution that can be customised according to the needs of its operator.
Sea Serpent can primarily be deployed from a USV platform or as a ‘clip-on’ capability for the Navy’s existing lightweight and medium-weight vessels.
When deployed from a fully autonomous platform, the ASW system offers rapidly deployable subsea intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
Capps added: “We intend to take what we learned from this exercise to continue improving the Sea Serpent system, and we’re confident that this will represent a significant utility to the US and other allied navies in the future.”
