Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies Corporation, has been awarded a $308.46m contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command for an option exercise of combat system engineering, miscellaneous material and travel supporting combat system installation, integration, development, testing, correction, maintenance and modernisation of Zumwalt-class mission systems and mission system equipment.
The US Navy accepted the delivery of the first Zumwalt-class destroyer in 2020 at its new home port in San Diego. Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems served as the prime contractor for the Zumwalt Combat System.
The second Zumwalt class next-generation destroyer was commissioned by the US Navy in 2019, with the US Navy commissioning the third ship of the Zumwalt class within that year.
The work, expected to be completed by April 2024, will be performed in various locations, primarily Tewksbury, Massachusetts. This contract option exercise follows previous work conducted by Raytheon Missiles & Defense to support the Zumwalt-class mission systems.
The Zumwalt class is a class of guided missile destroyers designed for multi-mission operations including surface warfare, anti-aircraft warfare and naval gunfire support.
These destroyers utilise advanced technologies such as the Total Ship Computing Environment Infrastructure and AN/SPY-3 Multi-Function Radar to provide the Navy with a capable and versatile platform.
This contract award reaffirms Raytheon Missiles & Defense’s commitment to supporting the Navy’s mission and advancing the technology capabilities of the Zumwalt-class destroyers. The company has a long history of delivering innovative solutions for the Navy and other US military branches.
The US is expected to be the largest spender on the procurement of destroyers worldwide, with $53.1bn between 2023 and 2033, according to GlobalData’s ‘The Global Naval Vessels and Surface Combatants Market 2023-2033‘ report.
Naval Sea Systems Command, located in Washington, DC, is the contracting activity for this award. The command is responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining the Navy’s ships, submarines and associated systems.
This year, Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to equip the Zumwalt class with hypersonic strike weapons. Under this award, the company will be responsible for integrating a conventional prompt strike weapon system into the US Navy’s Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers.
