Marinette Marine Corp has been awarded a contract worth $526.2m by the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., to exercise an option for the detailed design and construction of one Constellation-class guided-missile frigate, FFG 65.
The majority of the work for this project will be performed in Marinette, Wisconsin, where Marinette Marine Corp’s shipyard is located. This location, known for its robust shipbuilding infrastructure, will contribute to 51% of the project’s completion.
However, it is worth noting that a variety of other locations across the United States will also play a role in the construction process, further enhancing the nationwide impact of this contract. The project is expected to be completed by December 2028.
James Marques, aerospace, defence, and security analyst at GlobalData, claimed: “The constellation class is interesting because it’s the first time in a while the US Navy is going for a slightly cheaper warship that isn’t as powerful as its destroyers or cruisers but still pretty capable.
It frees up the more high-end vessels for the most demanding assignments and missions whilst letting the frigates take ‘lighter’ duties like counter-piracy and general patrolling.”
Marinette Marine Corp, a leading shipbuilding company, has recently made strides in the defence sector by securing a substantial contract from the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C. The agreement, valued at $526m enables Marinette Marine Corp to exercise an option for the detailed design and construction of a Constellation class guided-missile frigate, specifically the FFG 65.
Marinette Marine has a history of building Constellation-class frigates for the U.S. Navy, with their most recent contracts from the U.S. Navy coming in 2021 for the second Constellation-class guided-missile frigate. The construction of the first Constellation Class Frigate commenced in 2022.
The Constellation class frigate is an advanced naval vessel designed to provide capabilities in guided-missile warfare. This contract award reaffirms Marinette Marine Corp’s expertise in shipbuilding and highlights its commitment to delivering maritime solutions to the United States Navy.
In 2021, BAE Systems were awarded a $26m contract to equip Constellation class frigates with fully-automatic 57mm Mk 110 naval guns.
As the project progresses, Marinette Marine Corp’s commitment to excellence will ensure the successful delivery of a cutting-edge naval vessel that meets the rigorous standards of the Naval Sea Systems Command.
