The vessel’s handover event also included the christening of the second submarine of the class, S42, at TKMS shipyard.
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems CEO Dr Peter Feldhaus said: “We are proud to have reached this significant milestone in the construction programme for the Egyptian Navy.
“This success was possible only thanks to constant further development of our products, an open and trusting dialogue with our customer as well as our highly motivated and skilled employees.”
TKMS said that the construction schedule has so far proceeded as per schedule.
In 2011, Egypt initially placed an order to purchase two of the German-built Type 209 submarines. In December 2015, the company announced the naming of the first submarine. Furthermore, the country ordered for two more submarines of the class in 2014.
Developed as the newest version of Thyssenkrupp’s HDW Class 209 submarines, the HDW Class 209/1400mod submarines are compact and incorporated with the latest technology, better combat strength, enhanced battery payload, and low signatures.
With a displacement capacity of 1,450t, the vessels are 62m long and can accommodate a crew of 30.
Currently, Thyssenkrupp is under contract to construct HDW 209/1400mod class submarines for 14 navies.
