In a development for Poland’s maritime defence strategy, Rohde & Schwarz has solidified its position as a partner in the construction of the Miecznik frigates.
The German company, recognised for its communications architectures and electronic support measures (ESM), announced signing a contract with PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rohde & Schwarz will supply radar and communications ESM (RCESM) systems designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the three multi-role Miecznik frigates. These systems detect and identify potential threats, ensuring the safety and security of the naval platform and its crew.
The frigates, which will be produced domestically, will bolster Poland’s defence industry and help the country contribute to the NATO alliance. The ships have a wide variety of uses, including securing sea lines of communication and critical infrastructure. According to GlobalData’s “Poland Defense Market 2024-2029” report, the vessels are expected to be delivered between 2029 and 2034.
“We are honoured to have been selected by PGZ to provide the RCESM system for the Miecznik frigates of the Polish Navy,” stated Michael Niewöhner, Vice President of Electronic Intelligence at Rohde & Schwarz.
“This contract is a testament of our commitment to providing the highest quality technology and solutions to our customers, and we are looking forward to working closely with PGZ to ensure a successful deployment of the system on the new frigates.”
Rohde & Schwarz’s RCESM system offers configurable solutions tailored to naval applications. Already proven in service with other navies, this technology is intended to elevate Poland’s naval defence capabilities.
The collaboration between Rohde & Schwarz and PGZ marks the beginning of a long-term partnership to support Poland’s defence and security objectives. It highlights Rohde & Schwarz’s expansion into the Polish naval market, reinforcing its status as a systems integrator and solutions provider in the global defence industry.
Babcock was selected as the platform design provider for the Miecznik programme, which is centred on its Arrowhead 140 frigate design. Thales and MBDA are also partners in Poland’s enhancement of its naval capabilities through the Miecznik frigate programme.
Thales has integrated its Tacticos combat management system (CMS) into Poland’s new frigates. The frigates will also employ Thales’ Sea Master 410 Block 2 for long-range surveillance and the Sea Ceptor naval air defence system from MBDA, aimed at countering supersonic threats. Integrating Sea Ceptor involves utilising MBDA’s CAMM missiles in the Mk41 VLS.
The partnership is expected to lay the groundwork for future collaborations between Rohde & Schwarz and PGZ, fostering growth within Poland’s defence industry while fortifying regional security in the Baltic Sea.
