Scandinavian Micro Systems (SMS) provides high-quality instruments for precise naval navigation.
We aim to contribute to the safety of our customers at sea with cost-effective and innovative solutions along with a committed customer service and support team.
Naval vessel integration capabilities
SMS provides vessel integration for communications and navigation as well as security, monitoring, and control in the naval industry.
Our software and IT network products cover audio visual systems and CCTV as well as security systems such as intrusion alarms, Kerio control network server/Fir-wall, and virtual local area network (VLAN) management. SMS also offer integration of controls for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), lights, curtains and blinds.
We support naval communications with battery-free emergency phone systems, talk-back and intercom systems, and public address, general alarm and phone systems. We also provide integration of global maritime distress and safety systems (GMDSS) as well as very high frequency (VHF) and single sideband (SSB) communications.
Support for precise naval navigation is a core part of SMS’ mission. We supply autopilot and steering systems along with gyrocompass and repeaters, radar, GPS, and automatic identification systems (AIS). We also offer electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), chart plotters, bridge navigational watch alarm systems (BNWAS), and optical bearing devices (OBD).
Optical bearing devices
Originally developed to support high-speed navigation in narrow fjords, the third-generation SMS OBD provides rapid target acquisition for determining precise vessel location. With improved mechanics and an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, along with optional DUAL-Grip control, the latest ScanRepeater™ product is used by the Norwegian Navy and Coast Guard, as well as cruise chips and mega yachts.
Specific features of the latest OBD from SMS include an optical bearing line (OBL) displayed directly in ECDIS or radar systems, as well as optical running fixes that can be stored in the electronic logbook. Along with determining your position independently of GPS, the OBD can identify other ships through OBD optics and receive AIS information in real time.
The third-generation OBD can be configured as a standing version with a mounted bracket or a hanging version with a pull-down arm. OBD products from SMS are certified by DNV.
About Scandinavian Micro Systems
Oddbjorn Steinsland established SMS in Norway in 1977. Originally developing controls for High Pressure Water Pumps, SMS now manufactures a broad range of naval equipment to support precise navigation and safety at sea.
In 1996, SMS opened an office in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, US, to better serve the cruise ship market and promote the SMS LR40 and LR60 Gyro repeaters in the US market. SMS now has a team of highly trained technicians in Florida that can service marine equipment on-site 24/7.
SMS also has an office in Essex, UK, which focuses on the further development of ScanDisplay software as well as embedded software for our navigation instruments.
