Bartington Instruments designs and manufactures high-performance components and equipment deployed in strategic land, sea, and air defence systems, and especially in magnetic signature measurements and mitigation of vessels.

Our fluxgate magnetometers and magnetic susceptibility measuring instruments are used around the world to detect diverse threats, including weapons, personnel, vehicles, unexploded ordnance, and landmines. Other key applications include the airborne and seaborne search for submarines and divers, perimeter, border and harbour surveillance, mine countermeasures, UAV navigation, and system compass calibration. We also develop advanced components for integration into leading-edge defence systems.

Submersible magnetometer for degaussing ranges: Mag-03RC

These magnetometers are designed for marine surveillance and magnetic signature measurements. They operate over cables of up to 2km in length and are submersible to 2km. The included test features provide customers with a rapid functionality check of the sensor prior to each measurement run.

Installation and maintenance are made easy with underwater mateable connectors, which are available in stainless steel or titanium. Both types can be integral to the housing or on a cable tail.

With a 350mm coil diameter, HC16 allows for testing of small sensors at higher fields.
The Mag613 miniature magnetometer array can be used to position sensors throughout a scaled model for signature measurements.
Mag-13 three-axis magnetic field sensors for measurement of geomagnetic and other background fields, submersible to 5,000m.
Mag-03RC submersible magnetometer for degaussing ranges.
Mag648 low power three-axis magnetic field sensor for large networks of sensors and surveillance, available with enclosure submersible to 2,000m or unpackaged.
Grad-13D and Grad-13S three-axis submersible gradiometer, ideal for detecting unexploded ordnance or pipes and cables on the seabed. Operates to depths of 200m (Grad-13S) or 5,000m (Grad-13D).

The DAS1 data acquisition system is available for use with up to 80 Mag-03RC magnetometers.

Range of low-noise three-axis magnetic field sensors: Mag-13

These high-performance fluxgate sensors provide precision measurements of static and alternating magnetic fields in three axes. They are available with a wide range of enclosures, making them suitable for use in the laboratory, field, and underwater. Applications include analysing the magnetic signature of ships for degaussing ranges. Sensors are available with noise levels <4pTrms/√Hz at 1Hz and for the operation to depths of up to 5km.

Each sensor includes a test coil that removes the need for a calibration unit, plus a temperature sensor, and an electrical shield to increase immunity and reduce emissions. They are easy to integrate into the customer’s own measurement platform and can be combined with our Power Supplies and Data Acquisition Units to create a complete measurement system.

Low-power magnetometers: Mag648S / Mag649S

These are compact three-axis magnetic field sensors, submersible to 2km, designed for applications that require very low power consumption (<15mW), including large networks of sensors in harbours and offshore surveillance. The Mag648 is designed for surveillance and perimeter security applications. It is available in variants suitable for use on land or underwater, submersible to 2km.

Submersible three-axis fluxgate sensor array: Mag613

This array of eight miniature sensors provides measurements over 24 channels (8 x three-axis) for precision magnetic field mapping. It provides magnetic signature characterisation in pressurised environments up to 50 bars, or 500m depth. Sensing elements are less than 1cm³, making them ideal for mounting inside scale models to achieve high spatial resolution. Sensors can be positioned close together without the risk of interference – crosstalk is suppressed up to 3kHz. A cable of up to 5m connects them to the electronics unit, which contains the power supply, driving circuitry, and analogue multiplexer.

Three-axis submersible gradiometer: Grad-13

Grad-13 is ideal for detecting unexploded ordnance, and pipes and cables on the seabed. Housed in a carbon fibre pressure enclosure, it operates to depths of 200m (Grad-13S) and can be mounted on ROVs or used on its own. With baseline options of 500mm, 750mm, or 1,000mm between sensing elements, it has noise levels of <20pTrms/√Hz at 1Hz and bandwidth to 2kHz.

Data acquisition system: DAS1

This versatile, multi-sensor data acquisition unit is intended for use with large arrays of sensors and can take up to 480 analogue inputs. It is designed for operation with most Bartington Instruments magnetometers and is compatible with the most depth and acoustic sensors. Measurements are sampled and recorded by a self-contained unit using a LabView™-based software interface.

Aerospace-qualified three-axis magnetometers: Mag628 / Mag629 / Mag669

These three-axis fluxgate magnetometers are designed specifically to meet the exacting environmental requirements of aerospace applications and are ideally suited for vector compensation in airborne magnetometry and for integration in Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) systems.

Mag629 and Mag669 have a rugged, mountable two-part construction sensor head assembly and separate electronics module with noise levels of <8pTrms/√Hz at 1Hz and <4pTrms/√Hz at 1Hz. Mag628 has unpackaged electronics for integration into existing systems.

Naval equipment testing: Helmholtz Coils

Bartington Helmholtz Coils are ideal for precise calibration of any type of vector magnetometers and some scalar magnetometers, whether in mobile comms or a stand-alone sensor.

The HC1 has a diameter of 500mm and can produce a 0.1% homogeneous field in a volume of 260cm³. It is available as a single, two, or three-axis unit. It generates fields of up to 500μT at DC and 100μT at 3kHz.

The HC2 coil has a diameter of 1m, making it ideal for testing large items. The coil pairs generate a homogeneous magnetic field up to ±250μT at DC and up to ±100μT at 300Hz. It produces a homogeneous field to 1% in a volume of 14,000cm³ and homogeneous to 0.1% in a volume of 2,500cm³.

HC16 has a coil diameter of just 350mm. It is built on non-conductive coil formers to preventing the production of eddy currents. The coil pairs generate a homogeneous magnetic field up to ±1mT from DC to 440Hz and >±100μT at 5kHz. This enables small sensor testing at higher fields and provides a homogeneous field to 1% in a volume of 1,150cm³ and homogeneous to 0.1% in a volume of 175cm³.

Bartington also supplies Ferronato™ Helmholtz coils produced by Serviciencia SL for testing even larger objects. These coils are compatible with the Bartington PA1 power amplifier and CU1 control unit. They are available in 1.3m (BH1300) and 2m (BHC2000) sizes.

The Helmholtz Coil Control System includes the PA1 power amplifier, CU1 control unit and CU2 closed-loop module. It enables production and control of the current to be applied to the Helmholtz coils.
