S-81 is the first submarine of the S-80 class designed and built by Navantia. It was christened as ‘Isaac Peral’ after its launch in May this year.
Last month, the official qualification tests of the first version of the Integrated Nucleus of the Combat System (ICSC) were carried out in the LBTS of the S-80 programme.
Navantia said that the test results were proven to be fully satisfactory.
This version, known as ‘VC 9.0 SCA’, is the combination of core development and advanced integration work in the LBTS.
It will be installed onboard the S-80 submarine from 31 August. After this installation, the vessel’s combat system testing will start.
According to the company, the ICSC provides a weapons and sensors suite of the Combat System, with a high-level integration for the optimal management of operational information and of the command and control (C2) centre.
With the S-80 programme, Spain joins a small list of countries capable of designing and building submarines.
The S-80 class submarines are 80.8m long, with a diameter of 7.3m and a submerged displacement of 3,000t.
Featuring stealth capabilities, the boats will be equipped with the integrated combat system and platform control system developed by Navantia Sistemas and an atmosphere-independent propulsion system.
