USS New York, built with 7.5t of steel from the World Trade Center site, has sailed into New York harbour ahead of its commissioning on 7 November 2009.

The San Antonio Class LPD warship will carry sea-based platforms, including the V-22 tilt-rotor Osprey aircraft, three types of helicopters, 14 expeditionary fighting vehicles and several air-cushioned landing craft.

The $1bn vessel set off from Virginia with a crew of 360 members and delivered a 21-gun salute near Ground Zero.

The ship was christened at Northrop Grumman’s Avondale shipyard on 1 March 2008. The keel for the ship was laid in August 2004.
