Irving Shipbuilding will refit the Canadian Navy’s Protecteur Class replenishment oiler ship HMCS Preserver, under a $44.7m navy contract.

Under the contract, the company will provide structural repair, basic mechanical repairs, hull valve refurbishment and shaft line repairs.

In addition, Irving will carry out comprehensive maintenance and repairs to the oiler’s various ship systems including main and auxiliary machinery, air conditioning, and electrical and piping systems.

The 172m-long and 23m-wide auxiliary oil replenishment ship carries two CH124 Sea King helicopters and can accommodate a complement of 365 crew.

The ship has a displacement capacity of 24,700t and a cruising speed in excess of 20kt.

Refit work on HMCS Preserver will begin in April 2010 at the company’s Halifax shipyard, and is expected to be complete by February 2011.
