The Royal Netherlands Navy will deploy a submarine from the end of September to the end of November to conduct patrol missions in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia.

Dutch defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop said the deployment would be a part of Nato’s anti-piracy mission in the region, according to dutchnews.nl.

The navy will remain in active operations in the region for up to 18 additional months, he said.

Since 2008, an international fleet of warships has been patrolling the Gulf of Aden, preventing Somali pirates from hijacking commercial vessels.
