DCNS has awarded a contract to Sagem to modernise the fire control systems onboard the French Navy’s six Floreal-class surveillance frigates.
Under the contract, Sagem will modernise fire control systems based on new-generation Electro-Optical Multifunction System (EOMS-NG) to provide fire control for the ship’s main artillery, a 100mm gun as well as contribute to their tactical situation awareness and self-defence of the ship.
The single unit high-performance EOMS-NG optronic system features day-night infrared search and track (IRST) type passive panoramic observation, identification, tracking and fire control as well as very short reaction time between detection and engagement.
Ideal for fighting piracy and illicit traffic, the EOMS-NG will replace the existing Najir optronic system.
The 93.5m long frigate has a beam of 14.1m, draft of 4.3m, a full load displacement capacity of 2,950t and can accommodate a crew of 100.
Chantiers de l’Atlantique-built Floreal-class frigates are integrated with Thales DR-2000 electronic support measures equipment, CSEE Dagaie decoy-launchers and infrared decoys to deceive incoming anti-ship missiles.
Powered by a combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion system, the frigates also feature DRBV-15 surveillance radar operating on E/F-band, DRBV-21 Mars 05 surface search radar and two Racal-Decca 1226 radars for navigation and helicopter control purposes.
Additionally, the frigate is armed with two MM-38 missiles, a Giat 100mm L55 Model 68 gun, two Giat 20mm 20F2 guns, and two twin Simbad lightweight launchers, firing Mistral missiles, to provide close-in air defence.
Installation of the new optronic system on the first Floreal-class frigate is expected to complete by the end of 2012.
The EOMS-NG system has also been selected for integration on UAE’s six Baynunah-class corvettes, DCSN’s new Gowind-class offshore patrol vessel, L’Adroit, Australian Navy’s new LHD helicopter carriers, air defence destroyers and Anzac-class frigates.
