The latest $311m option forms part of a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract, which has an overall potential value of $1.5bn, if all options are exercised over five years.
As part of the contract, Electric Boat will provide design, engineering, material and logistics support, in addition to research and development activities for operational submarines and submersibles.
In addition, the company will provide information services, planning, scheduling and technical support for submarine maintenance, as well as upgrade activities, training and facility support, and affordability and cost reduction aid.
The US Naval Sea Systems Command will act as the contracting cycle.
Work under the deal will be performed by employees from Electric Boat’s engineering and design organisation, who work on all aspects of the submarine lifecycle, ranging from concept formulation and design through to construction, maintenance and upgrades, and inactivation and disposal.
During mid-September, Electric Boat signed a similar contract worth $234m from the US Navy, which involved the provision of non-propulsion plant electrical system engineering, propulsion plant engineering, maintenance engineering, refit / availability technical support and on-site support, as well as a configuration change programme design and installation support.
