The US Navy has awarded two contracts to General Dynamics for development of advanced submarine technologies, as well as for continued work on submarine modernisation programme.
Under the first contract, valued at $29.8m, General Dynamics Electric Boat will develop advanced submarine technologies for current and future undersea platforms for the US Navy.
Electric Boat will also perform advanced submarine research and development studies in support of technology areas including manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics and materials.
In addition to supporting near-term Virginia-class technology insertion, future submarine concepts and core technologies, the company will conduct research and development work in affordability, manning, hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling and safety, as part of modification contract.
The contract, which was initially awarded in November 2010, has a potential value of $711m over five years if all options are exercised.
Under the $15m second contact, initially awarded in December 2012, General Dynamics Electric Boat will conduct non-nuclear maintenance work for submarines homeported at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton.
Electric Boat will also provide a wide range of overhaul, repair and modernisation services in support of nuclear submarines, floating dry-docks, support and service craft and other platforms and equipment at the submarine base.
