During the demonstration, TerraMax UGV performed convoy operations and displayed obstacle avoidance capabilities, while achieving speeds of 35mph.
Oshkosh Corporation chief unmanned systems engineer John Beck said that the demonstration provided advanced level of sophistication and capabilities of TerraMax UGV technology for government leaders and representatives.
"Two unmanned MTVRs, supervised by a single operator, executed multiple 30-minute missions on a rugged off-road course in very dusty conditions," Beck added.
The TerraMax system was also put through enhanced MAGTF operations (EMO) limited objective experiment (LOE) 2.2 to validate its tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), and evaluated future mission-related technologies and capabilities.
Designed as a scalable kit, Oshkosh’s technology does not alter the original payload and performance capabilities of the vehicle and can conduct planned missions in complete autonomous mode or by ‘shadowing’ the lead vehicle.
Vehicles equipped with TerraMax UGV can also maintain performance capabilities in all weather conditions and require minimal human interaction or operator training.
Oshkosh team includes the National Robotics Engineering Center, the US Marine Corps (USMC) Warfighting Lab (MCWL) and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, which have developed and integrated the TerraMax UGV technology for the Cargo UGV project through the Joint Ground Robotics Enterprise Robotics Technology Consortium.
Oshkosh has plans to showcase the technology at the ongoing 2012 Annual Association of the US Army (AUSA) Meeting & Exposition held in Washington DC.
