The assets that will participate in the exercise include two aircraft carriers, 19 surface ships, more than 200 aircraft and an estimated 18,000 personnel from the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
During the exercise, the participating forces will perform a wide range of capabilities, from maritime security operations to anti-submarine and air defence exercises, and complex warfighting that demonstrate the joint forces’ inherent flexibility.
The fifth biennial field training exercise in the Valiant Shield series, which began in 2006, aims to help the US forces to develop regional and global power projection capabilities to succeed in defence of its interests and its allies around the world.
The manoeuvre focuses on integration of joint training within the US forces, and enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces through detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
Additionally, the training exercise is designed to build a pre-integrated joint force, which develops interoperable and complementary cross-domain capabilities. The benefits of this realistic, shared training enhances the flexibility of the joint force to develop new tactics, techniques and procedures as per operational conditions.
