VSTEP has secured a new contract from Canadian manufacturer CAE to deliver a range of custom-built, full-mission ship bridge simulators for the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Naval Training Centre (NTC).
The new NAUTIS 3 simulation platform has been selected following an extensive evaluation of its visual quality, hydrodynamic fidelity and extendibility.

By GlobalDataA selection of the bridge simulators will be reconfigurable for use by the different vessels of the UAE Navy in order to ensure vessel-specific training capabilities.
VSTEP’s bridge simulators will use the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Common Database (OGC CDB) for high-fidelity synthetic environments, in addition to data interfaces and industry-standard networking protocols such as the high-level architecture (HLA) for integration with other training devices, including CAE’s naval combat system simulators and engine room simulators.
VSTEP co-founder and CEO Pjotr van Schothorst said: “This is a major strategic win for VSTEP and clearly demonstrates our capabilities to provide adaptive and fully integrated simulators in the defence industry.
“CAE’s choice of VSTEP as their provider of ship bridge simulators for the UAE Naval Training Centre proves that our new simulation platform NAUTIS 3, which we are about to introduce on the market, has the quality and flexibility needed for the training needs of the most demanding clients.”
CAE also received a new contract from the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the UAE Armed Forces last year, which will see the company design and build a comprehensive NTC for the UAE Navy.
The facility is expected to help support training programmes for individuals, teams and whole ships, as well as joint / collective missions for the UAE Armed Forces.
It will feature several integrated ship simulation-based training suites and maritime aircraft sensor stations.
The UAE Naval Training Centre will be based in Taweelah and be connected to many naval and air bases across the country.
The facility is expected to be completed and ready-for-training in 2019.
